Do I need just Rise of the Elves to get the whole game or do I need to
buy Servants of the Dark and Guardians of Light also to get the whole
game?

I was actually looking into this last night, and was very confused too.
Here's a post on the Disciples forum I found which should hopefully clarify
it for you...

The Disciples 2 Expansions ('Guardians of the Light' and 'Servants of the
Dark') are standalone. No other purchase is necessary to play one or the
other.

'Guardians of the Light' allows you to play the full campaigns of the 2 good
races: Empire and Clans.

'Servants of the Dark' allows you to play the full campaigns of the 2 evil
races: Undead and Legions.

They both install to the same directory and if you install both, then the
icon will change to 'Galleon's Return' and you will be able to play the full
campaigns of all 4 races. You should not install these expansions in the
same directory as Disciples 2: Dark Prophecies.

You will need level 10 leaders in order to play the expansion. You can find
level 10 leaders on the first Disciples CD under D:\Bonus\Exported leaders
(where D is the letter of your CD drive). You will need to copy these
leaders to your Disciples 2 directory under exports C:\Program
Files\Strategy First\Disciples 2 expansion\Exports.

The D2: Rise of the Elves expansion is a stand alone expansion and should be
installed in another directory. You should not install the Rise of the Elves
expansion in the same directory as GotL, SotD expansions or the original
game Dark Prophecies.

<snip>

I have all three expansions and can confirm what Jim said.
Guardians of the Light and Servants of the Dark combined
when I installed them, in the same folder, to become "Gallean's
Return" or something like that. When I run that, I can access
the original 4 campaigns (D2) as well as the new, higher
level good and dark campaigns.

Rise of the Elves went into a seperate folder. It includes all
4 of the original D2 campaigns. And also adds the new Elf
campaign. So when you choose a new saga, you can cycle
thru all 5 races. However, the higher level good/dark campaigns
are not in there. When you choose a race, it goes straight to
"choose your lord" rather than giving the choice of which
particular campaign.

I wish they had made them go together somehow. Not that
space is a big concern, but it would be nice, and more
convient as well. I also have concerns how it may play
out later with other expansions and transfering heros,
depending on where the new expansions install too. For
example, would I be able to import a high level hero from
Servants/Guardians into a campaign that may install over
Rise of the Elves.

Your... joking me right?

You mean my Pegasus Knight I've managed to get to Level 7 could've started
off as a Level 10 hero?!

That cant be right, the game is too easy with a Level 7 hero near the end of
the Empire campaign...

Unless im just really really confused :)

Either way I just completed the Empire campaign... geeze talk about a kick
in the nuts for an ending. I went the Instant battle option because I wanted
to quit out of the battle with "The Boss" (to prevent spoilders) real quick
as I was sure I was going lose when one of my Defenders of the Faith wasnt
fully healed. Turns out I win the battle without a single loss... didnt even
get to hit the boss manually either... having two level 7 prophetesses with
barkskin and every sort of magical protection on them really does make the
game way too easy. Especially when your Pegasus knight does 400 damage a
hit... Even the capitals arnt really a challange with that sorta combo.

Kinda glad its over actually, god damn that game draged on. Its a "thank god
I dont have to play it anymore" kinda relief too...

Each DII "expansion pack" contains the game engine. If you get Rise
of the Elves, you'll be able to play the game, but you will not have
access to the campaigns or the scenarios in the original DII or the
other expansion packs.

I have only the original DII but I plan to get some or all of the
expansion packs. It's really a very entertaining game.

I'm afraid that is not accurate, unless I misunderstand you, or
do not know exactly what campaigns came with the original. I
don't own the original, I have all three expansions.

I have Servants/Guardians installed together to the same
folder. After doing that, it is called "Gallean's Return" or
something like that. When I start a new saga in it, and choose
a race, it asks you which campaign and it shows 2 to choose
from (regardless of which race I choose). The first choice
is clearly labelled as the "Dark Prophecy" campaign. The
other that is listed is the new campaign from Servants/Guardians,
and require a level 10 hero.

When I run Rise of the Elves, and choose new saga, I can
choose from all 5 races, instead of just the four original
races. But each race only has one campaign (you don't
get a choice like in Servants/Guardians, it just goes right
to the "choose lord" selection). I just tried it out and started
a new campaign as the Empire, and it is definately the same
first campaign from my combo Guardians/Servants install.
"The Necromancers Spirit" with the objective "Destroy
Erhog the Dark". As I said, in my combo install from the
other expansions, this campaign as listed as being the
"Dark Prophecy" campaign so I ASSUME it's the original.

So to sum up, it appears to me that Guardians of the Light
and Servants of the Dark combine and give you all the
original 4 campaigns, plus the new 4 campaigns from those
expansions. Rise of the Elves has the original 4 campaigns,
plus the *one* new campaign for the elves.

I wasn't aware of that. It makes Rise of the Elves an even better value.
