Post by NightSky 421Post by p***@standardregister.comAoM skirmish has 2 difficulty settings...boringly easy, and insanely
difficult.
That's what sunk AoM for me as well. On Easy difficulty, the AI just builds
up structures like mad and hardly, if ever, attacks your base. Move it up
one level to Moderate difficulty and you are faced with endless large waves
of enemies coming to your camp. It doesn't take long for it to start
happening either. I liked the Age of Empires games and bought the
Collector's Edition of Age of Mythology. In retrospect, I wish I would have
skipped the game completely. I watched the DVD about the making of the game
and laughed in an evil way when the one woman said that they wanted to make
the game accessible to gamers of all skill levels.
I understand their intentions - they wish to make their AI to be
challenging to everyone. They feel that anyone playing the game on "Easy"
probably has limited skill, while those that play on "Moderate" are
probably veterans of other games. The fact that there's a difficuly gap
seems very odd, especially since the only visible change involves the size
of enemy attack forces.
At least it isn't like Tzar, where the AI seems to go all out even on the
Easy difficulty.
Post by NightSky 421Sure, they succeeded,
but Easy is too much of a pushover and the so-called "Moderate" difficulty
is something I dread more than a Hard opponent in Generals Zero Hour.
The AI player in Zero Hour is really a joke - any experienced player can
produce anti-computer tactics that allow winning most of the time, mainly
because the AI use scripted attack patterns (in addition to relying on
cheating or some other form of advantage.)

they were considering adding the handicaps found in the multiplayer mode
into the single player skirmish, but I don't think it ever happened.
It's not a problem since you can create a multiplayer game and assign your
handicap there. You can't assign a handicap to the computer, but you can
boost your own economy up to the limit.
The only disadvantage of doing it this way is that there is no auto-pause
when you check for unit help or begin to advance ages.
