i like how difficult this game is, it gives u a challenge and you do
not go through the game unless you practice on a custom game over and
over. the more you practice the better you will get at the campaign.

Well, I decided to return the game. When I told the guy at the store
why I didn't like it, he said "No Wonder". I told him I only play
skirmish maps (I almost never play the campaigns in any game). He
said
skirmish is ridiculously hard in WC3. He said it isn't too well set
up
of a game unless you want to play multiplayer, which I agree. There
are
no hardness or speed settings in skirmish mode - I looked & looked &
just did not see them.
Oh well, maybe Age of Mythology will be more my style.
*lol* talk about out of the frying pan into the fire...

AoM skirmish has 2 difficulty settings...boringly easy, and insanely
difficult.

That's what sunk AoM for me as well. On Easy difficulty, the AI just builds
up structures like mad and hardly, if ever, attacks your base. Move it up
one level to Moderate difficulty and you are faced with endless large waves
of enemies coming to your camp. It doesn't take long for it to start
happening either. I liked the Age of Empires games and bought the
Collector's Edition of Age of Mythology. In retrospect, I wish I would have
skipped the game completely. I watched the DVD about the making of the game
and laughed in an evil way when the one woman said that they wanted to make
the game accessible to gamers of all skill levels. Sure, they succeeded,
but Easy is too much of a pushover and the so-called "Moderate" difficulty
is something I dread more than a Hard opponent in Generals Zero Hour.
Ensemble Studios said to me a couple of months after AoM was released that
they were considering adding the handicaps found in the multiplayer mode
into the single player skirmish, but I don't think it ever happened.

Well, that's fine. There's really little wonder why I skipped the expansion
pack for AoM and will be skipping Age of Empires 3 if they're going to pull
this crap again. I expect AoE 3 will simply be AoM with a fresh coat of
paint.

WOW. My opinion is completely different. I found Moderate setting to
be too easy and the Hard setting to be too hard. I have been looking
for something in between but could not find it. My son and I tried to
play against 3 moderates or 1 hard, but crushed both very easily.
When we do 2 hard comps, we get hammered and cannot fight in all the
locations with the small population.

Heh, maybe they need to implement SIX different levels of difficulty to
accomodate all of us! :-)

I understand their intentions - they wish to make their AI to be
challenging to everyone. They feel that anyone playing the game on "Easy"
probably has limited skill, while those that play on "Moderate" are
probably veterans of other games. The fact that there's a difficuly gap
seems very odd, especially since the only visible change involves the size
of enemy attack forces.

At least it isn't like Tzar, where the AI seems to go all out even on the
Easy difficulty.

The AI player in Zero Hour is really a joke - any experienced player can
produce anti-computer tactics that allow winning most of the time, mainly
because the AI use scripted attack patterns (in addition to relying on
cheating or some other form of advantage.)

It's not a problem since you can create a multiplayer game and assign your
handicap there. You can't assign a handicap to the computer, but you can
boost your own economy up to the limit.

The only disadvantage of doing it this way is that there is no auto-pause
when you check for unit help or begin to advance ages.

I tried that in the past (when I had the game installed) but was unable to
create a single player game using multiplayer mode. Too bad since I wanted
to implement the handicaps. Has that changed now?

It worked fine for me without installing the patch - most likely, the
network code failed in one way or another. Did you get any error message?

The most likely reason I can think of would be a lack of an active network
connection - if it doesn't find one, it probably stops right there.

That's probably what happened then. Thanks for the heads up.
